Put a Little Avatar in Your Heart

Yay! I have finally got Gravatars on my comments. Now to some of you that first statement sounded like some Josh H. gibberish. Allow me to explain.

An avatar is a small picture or image that forum and blog users have that displays beside their names whenever they post a comment or a forum thread. It serves no real purpose other than just being a nifty custom identifier. Some people use actual photos of themselves, some have pictures of their pets or kids and some have avatars featuring their favorite band. Now Gravatar is a free online service that allows users to sign up for an account with their name and email address and then they can upload any image they want to their Gravatar account. After they have uploaded a picture they want to Gravatar and have selected it as their Gravatar image, then no matter where that user goes on the web, if they comment on a forum or blog that supports Gravatar (which nearly all of them do) then their chosen Gravatar image will appear beside their comment. Users can upload as many images to Gravatar as they want and can switch between them as often as they want.

This is a functionality I have been trying to get here at the Smoak House and I have inadvertently implemented through the use of a WordPress plugin known as Ajaxed WordPress. This was a feature I did not expect but was thrilled to discover. So now I am here to encourage you all to go over and sign up for a Gravatar account and upload your own avatars. I know that it is completely geeky and there is no real value that it will add to your life. But it sure would be neat to see all of your mugs (or whatever funny picture you come up with) next to the comments you leave.

Also over the next few days (if all goes well) you will see a few small tweaks to the way you leave comments at The Smoak House. This also means that you may see some funny things show up as I am trying to get some things to work. But feel free to give me your feedback.

Josh H.
