christianity in action

Around the time that I started leading worship for Tree of Life church I purchased a Fender acoustic guitar that was on sale at a local musical instrument dealer. It never did sound that great but it got the job done. It has served me well however not longer after purchasing it, my cat Tom knocked a lamp on top of it which punctured a hole in the back. After 3 or so years of playing and lack of a hard case it is starting to show wear.

I wanted a new acoustic. I didn’t want anything fancy like a Taylor or a Martin, but something nice in the $500-$600 range that has a good sound and a sturdy construction. Oh and I really wanted a guitar with a built-in tuner. That was a must. But there’s no way I could come up with $500. I would have to save for several months but right now in our current economic climate that would be difficult. So I began praying that the Lord would provide a way for me to purchase a new guitar. He is able to bring about the means to do so in order that I could continue to minister through music.

I led worship for a Men’s Tres Dias weekend two weeks ago and I met a gentleman named Greg. He was a guitar player and so we had some great conversations about music and technique and guitars that we like and own. This past Sunday Greg gave me a call but at the time I didn’t recognize his name. He told me that the Lord had been greatly and unbelievably working in his life since that weekend and that he believed he had clearly heard from the Lord concerning me. He said “I have an Epiphone acoustic guitar that I am supposed to give you.” I was speechless. Epiphone isn’t quite a Taylor or a Martin but it is a well-respected brand and is just the sort of midrange guitar I would have wanted to purchase. So I met up with him later that day and he gave me the guitar. Upon seeing him I recognized him immediately. Ashamed that I had forgotten his name, I was so glad to see that he was the one who had called me because I recalled how we had hit it off so well during the Tres Dias weekend.

Anyway, the guitar looks brand new! Greg has greatly cared for this instrument. It has a hard case, it plays really well (though I need to replace the strings), and heavens to betsy it has a built-in tuner! It seems that the next chance for me to lead worship is so far away and I am so eager to use this amazing gift that Greg has given to me. I have never had prayer answered in such an awesome, uncanny manner. I know, along with Greg, that the Lord heard my prayer and He spoke to Greg in order to move him to act so as to answer my prayer. Greg didn’t know why he felt the strong urge to do this for me until I told him about my prayers for a new guitar.

In the case Greg had placed a letter addressed to me in which he said that he really enjoyed that guitar and said that he would not have thought to do such a thing on his own. He believed the Lord was saying that I could use that guitar. He did not know that I was praying for a new one. I had never mentioned it to him. I was encouraged, Lyndsay was encouraged, Greg and his wife were encouraged. I am still awestruck at God’s goodness and His attentiveness to even me.
